With the exception of Palmyra Atoll, these islands are unincorporated, chaotic domains of the United States. Starting at 2019, none of the islands have any perpetual inhabitants. The U.S. Domain of Palmyra Island is a fused region, isolated in 1959 from the remainder of the previous fused Territory of Hawaii when Hawaii turned into a state.
